There are a number of factors to consider when making an equipment purchase for a vessel. Cost, reliability, suitability, and even appearance are important variables to weigh, especially as the importance of the equipment increases. The combination of all these variables is what I define as “Value”.
While shopping for a new furler, it was not difficult to find some very satisfactory models at a decent price, however, I don’t believe they offer nearly the same value as my new Reefit Furler. The quality of design and construction are very apparent and nearly two years after installation, I have no doubt that this is the most durable and capable furler on the market. These factors, combined with competitive pricing from Island Planet Sails, have convinced me it the best value as well.
Thank you Dave and IPS, for introducing me to this product. I look forward to many more years of continued reliability and flawless operation of my Reefit Furler.
P.S. It doesn’t hurt that it looks great and still turns heads at the dock every day!
The systems are manufactured by Almasts in Launceston, Tasmania. The company was formed in the mid 1970’s to manufacture masts, rigging, furling systems, and accessories for the Australian marine industry.
Almast has achieved the best mix of features and simplicity with the REEFIT system. Contact between stainless steel and aluminium has been eliminated to avoid electrolysis. All components are Hardcoat Anodized to a minimum 20 micron thickness and the hardcoat process actually extends life of the metal and provides free running surfaces for the ball races. Bearing systems are designed for long life with low maintenance, low friction, and reliability. Best of all, they can be readily replaced if needed and are easily sourced.
Units are offered in a variety of wire sizes between 1/4” and 7/16”. A unit for half inch wire is in development. Request to be notified when the unit for half inch wire is available.
We are big proponents of the Reefit furlers that are featured above. However they aren’t suitable for every boat. For many boats under 30′ (9m), the wire sizes are too small for the Reefit. Racers willing to sacrifice some longevity may prefer a lighter unit. We offer furlers that we feel confident supporting long term. We don’t want to tell you 6 or 8 years from now that we can’t supply a needed part. Currently we offer Facnor, Furlex (Selden), Profurl, and Schaefer furlers.
Spinnaker, or top-down furlers, offer an easier way to tame your spinnaker than the traditional spinnaker sleeve. We offer furlers made by Facnor, Karver, Profurl, and Selden.
Code Zero Furlers
Code Zero furlers are popular in both racing and cruising applications. They are very reliable and easy to use. We offer units from Colligo, Facnor, Profurl, and Selden.
Opportunities for Riggers
Riggers are encouraged to contact Dave to learn about becoming dealers for REEFIT furlers. We are selective about who we ask to join the team and we limit the number of riggers in an area so we can insure that REEFIT owners who engage a rigger get a first rate service. Contact us to learn more about the opportunity to sell this quality furling system.
