    There are a number of factors to consider when making an equipment purchase for a vessel. Cost, reliability, suitability, and even appearance are important variables to weigh, especially as the importance of the equipment increases. The combination of all these variables is what I define as “Value”.

    While shopping for a new furler, it was not difficult to find some very satisfactory models at a decent price, however, I don’t believe they offer nearly the same value as my new Reefit Furler. REEFIT is a twin grooved headsail roller furling system designed for sailors who want the convenience and safety of instant reefing, while maintaining the best performance from their sails.

The systems are manufactured by Almasts in Launceston, Tasmania. The company was formed in the mid 1970’s to manufacture masts, rigging, furling systems, and accessories for the Australian marine industry.

Almast has achieved the best mix of features and simplicity with the REEFIT system. Contact between stainless steel and aluminium has been eliminated to avoid electrolysis. All components are Hardcoat Anodized to a minimum 20 micron thickness and the hardcoat process actually extends life of the metal and provides free running surfaces for the ball races. Bearing systems are designed for long life with low maintenance, low friction, and reliability. Best of all, they can be readily replaced if needed and are easily sourced.

Reefit furlers are designed for headstays from 1/4″ to 1/2″.
